About the presenter:
Lawrence J. Massa became president and CEO of the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) in October 2008, continuing a 34-year career as a hospital and health-care leader in the Upper Midwest.
Serving as a policy-maker, hospital executive and grassroots advocate throughout his career, Massa most recently led Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota, prior to taking the top executive spot at MHA. There, he acted as CEO of the municipal organization for almost 15 years. Before that role, Massa gained more than 10 years of for-profit and nonprofit health-care executive experience in South Dakota and Iowa. He also served as South Dakota’s secretary of health under Governor William J. Janklow.
Massa has been an instrumental leader at the Minnesota Hospital Association even before he took the helm as president in 2008. His work there as a member of the MHA board has included serving as chairman of the board of directors, the policy and advocacy committee and the political action committee.
Massa earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota and a Master of Science in business administrative services from Iowa State University. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
What to Expect:
Healthcare redesign is occurring at a rapid pace in response to federal policy changes and recent transactions involving large insurers, health systems and retailers. These changes will affect providers, payers and patients and certainly nurse leaders. The redesign involves making systematic changes to primary care practices and health systems to improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of patient care.
Mr. Massa will be discussing the current trends in hospital care that he is observing from his vantage point as the leader of the Minnesota Hospital Association.
